Types of Braces
Time — it’s of utmost importance in day-to-day life. Many decisions we make often have an effect on our allotment of time. For example, the choice of your Parsippany orthodontist and the type of braces your orthodontist uses can change the amount of time you must spend getting your dream smile.
At Caggiano Orthodontics, we value your time. It is our goal to get you your new smile with the fewest visits possible, minimizing the impact of your treatment on your free time. That is why Dr. Caggiano uses the latest high-tech braces, also called self-ligating braces.
Self-Ligating Brackets
What does self-ligating actually mean? It’s actually quite simple; the archwires are usually tied into — ligated — to the braces with so-called elastics or color ties. With self-ligating braces, the wire is continually pushed into the braces by a clip. In other words, they are self-adjusting! This makes life easier — the self-ligating clip is continually adjusting itself, so it doesn’t need to be replaced by elastics or colored ties. This means you need fewer visits for treatment. Also, the wires can be placed more quickly, which shortens the length of your visit accordingly. Lastly, the disadvantage of the old braces and the colored ties was that a lot of friction was created. This meant more force was needed, which was more uncomfortable for patients. With self-ligating braces, the force levels needed are lower due to lower friction, making your treatment more comfortable. This also means that the braces can slide along the wire with less friction, which may even shorten the entire length of treatment. In short, self-ligating braces give you more time to spend on living!
Metal & Clear
Metal self-ligating braces are made from high-quality stainless steel, just like traditional braces. What sets them apart is their self-ligating feature. As mentioned, the metal clips on the brackets reduce friction and allow the teeth to move more freely into their correct positions. This often leads to quicker treatment times and fewer adjustments during your orthodontic journey.
The metal versions of these braces are strong, resilient, and can withstand the rigors of daily life. They are an excellent choice for those who prioritize durability and efficiency in their orthodontic treatment.
For those who prefer a more discreet look, Caggiano Orthodontics offers clear self-ligating braces. These braces function similarly to their metal counterparts, but the brackets are made from a clear ceramic material that blends in with your natural tooth color.
Clear self-ligating braces offer a fantastic balance between aesthetics and functionality. They’re less noticeable than metal braces while delivering the same efficient results due to their self-ligating design.
Braces For Kids
We understand that as a parent, you want the best for your child’s oral health. As their teeth start to grow and change, you may wonder when is the right time to see an orthodontist and whether it’s a good time to start treatment. Our team is expertly trained in caring for even the littlest smiles, and we will only recommend treatment when necessary.
When is the best time to see an orthodontist?
According to the American Association of Orthodontists, it is recommended that children have their first orthodontic consultation by the age of 7. This may seem early, but it allows our team to assess your child’s oral development and determine if there are any issues that may require early intervention. Early treatment can help prevent more serious problems from developing in the future, potentially reducing the need for extensive orthodontic treatment down the line.
While it’s important to follow the recommended timeline for seeing an orthodontist, there are some signs that may indicate the need for early treatment with braces. These include:
- Difficulty chewing or biting
- Crowded or overlapping teeth
- Jaws that shift or make sounds when opening and closing
- Early loss of baby teeth (before age 5)
If you notice any of these signs in your child, it’s best to schedule an orthodontic consultation as soon as possible.
Our Approach
At Caggiano Orthodontics, we follow a two-phase treatment approach for our young patients. The first phase may involve early intervention with braces or other orthodontic appliances to address any issues that are present. This can help create the best environment for the permanent teeth to come in properly. The second phase, which typically begins around age 11-13, involves comprehensive orthodontic treatment to perfect the alignment and bite of the permanent teeth.
By following this approach, we can help ensure your child has a healthy and beautiful smile for life. Our team will work closely with you and your child every step of the way, making the journey towards straighter teeth a fun and positive experience. So don’t wait, request a consultation with us today, and let’s get started on creating a healthy, confident smile for your child!
Braces For Teens
Being a teenager can be tough, and not just because of the hormones and life changes. For many teens, the thought of braces adds another layer of anxiety to an already tumultuous time in their lives.
But don’t worry, at Caggiano Orthodontics we understand the unique needs and concerns of our teenage patients. We know that braces are more than just a dental treatment, they can have a significant impact on a young person’s self-esteem and confidence. That’s why we work hard to make the experience as positive and stress-free as possible.
Why Braces?
One of the most common questions we get from teenagers is “Why do I need braces?” The answer is simple: braces are used to correct misaligned teeth and help create a beautiful, healthy smile. While some teens may feel self-conscious about their crooked teeth, the long-term benefits of braces far outweigh any temporary discomfort or awkwardness.
We understand that braces can be a big commitment, both financially and in terms of time. That’s why we make sure to educate our teenage patients about the importance of proper oral hygiene during treatment. It’s crucial to maintain good habits such as brushing and flossing regularly, as well as attending regular appointments for adjustments.
But braces aren’t just about straightening teeth. They can also help correct bite issues, which can lead to long-term dental problems if left untreated. By addressing these issues early on, we can prevent more serious complications down the road.
We also know that having braces can make eating certain foods a bit of a challenge. That’s why our team will provide you with a list of foods to avoid and tips on how to care for your braces while still enjoying your favorite meals. And don’t worry, once your treatment is complete, you’ll be able to indulge in all those forbidden treats again!
Remember, braces are only temporary, and the benefits last a lifetime. Throughout your treatment journey, know that we are here to support and guide you every step of the way. So let’s work together towards achieving that perfect smile, and let your confidence shine through!
Braces For Adults
At Caggiano Orthodontics, we believe that everyone deserves a beautiful smile, regardless of their age. That’s why we specialize in braces for adults. Many adults may feel embarrassed or self-conscious about getting braces later in life, but we’re here to tell you that it’s never too late to achieve the smile of your dreams.
There are many reasons why adults may choose to get braces. Some common concerns include:
- Crooked or misaligned teeth
- Overcrowding in the mouth
- Jaw pain or discomfort
- Difficulty chewing or swallowing
- Self-esteem and confidence issues
Fortunately, braces can address all of these concerns and more. By straightening your teeth, braces not only improve the appearance of your smile, but also have many health benefits such as improved oral hygiene, better gum health, and a reduced risk of tooth decay and gum disease.
The Myths About Braces for Adults
Despite the numerous benefits, there are still some common myths surrounding braces for adults. Some of the most common misconceptions we hear concerning treatment for adults are:
- Braces are only for kids — This is simply not true. More and more adults are choosing to get braces in order to improve their oral health and enhance their appearance.
- Braces will be uncomfortable and painful — While it may take some time to adjust to the feeling of having braces, modern technology, and techniques have made braces more comfortable than ever before.
- Braces will make me look unprofessional — With the technology behind today’s braces, the brackets we use are smaller and more comfortable than ever. If you’re worried about your appearance during treatment, clear braces may be an excellent option for you.
At Caggiano Orthodontics, we understand that getting braces as an adult may seem like a major step.
